NETLI ENABLES MULTINATIONAL ENTERPRISES TO EXTEND THE REACH OF MISSION-CRITICAL APPLICATIONS GLOBALLY FROM A CENTRAL DATA CENTER
NetLightning™ Service Delivers Sub-second Response Times to Global Web Applications
Palo Alto, California - April 21, 2003 - Netli, the first company to offer a complete Application Delivery Network (ADN) service, today announced the availability of NetLightning, the company's flagship service that transparently provides global sub-second response times, high availability, and secure access for Web applications.
Netli offers a global solution for multinational companies looking to expand into new markets, increase revenue, and reduce costs through Web applications such as eCommerce, support portals, and online business information services. The benefits of Web applications are clear and compelling. But severe Internet performance and reliability problems are forcing companies to continue to rely on existing complex client server applications and expensive private networks.
The problem is that the Internet was never designed to support Web applications. The farther a user is from an application server, the worse the performance. The problem, known as distance-induced delay, is caused by the combination of geographic distance, the performance of the Internet protocols TCP and HTTP(S), and packet loss and congestion within the Internet. Consider that 30-50 round trip transfers between the data source and the end user are required to complete a transaction or transmit a typical Web page. While one round trip takes mere milliseconds to complete, several dozen round trips result in painful seconds of delay for the end user.
"The Internet was not designed to support the performance requirements of mission-critical applications," said George Hamilton, Yankee Group. "Existing Internet performance technologies such as caching, content delivery, and smart routing do not adequately address the performance requirements of dynamic, Web-based applications. A new solution is an Application Delivery Network (ADN), which promises to address the performance bottleneck. An ADN can help enterprises deliver sub-second response times and increased application availability with the cost benefits of a centralized data center and application infrastructure."
NetLightning eliminates distance-induced delay, giving globally-distributed users similar Web application performance and availability as local users. HP, Nielsen//NetRatings and Millipore are among the growing list of companies realizing the benefits of NetLightning for their Web applications. These benefits include:
- Global sub-second response time to Web applications
- Increased application availability
- Transparency (no changes to server software, application, or clients required)
- Ability to consolidate global delivery of Web applications from a single data center
- Secure SSL application support
- No capital investment required
"Our partnership with Netli is an unqualified success," said Dave Muir, NetRatings' Senior VP of Engineering and Operations. "We had a serious Internet performance problem that was hurting customer satisfaction with NetView, our premier Web usage measurement service. We were preparing to build distributed data centers when Netli introduced us to a completely new and transparent solution for delivering Web applications globally from a centralized data center. NetLightning enabled us to stop our costly data center expansion while consistently delivering sub-second response times to our end users around the world."
"The Web's open standards, SSL security, ubiquity, and low cost are driving companies around the world to want to use it instead of legacy client/server architectures and expensive private networks to support mission-critical applications," said John Peters, Netli CEO. "However, until now, the performance and availability penalties paid by remote users of these Web applications inhibited companies from realizing the full potential of the Internet. Netli has changed all that. Now, the Internet can be used to access critical business applications from around the world with the same security, performance, and availability of private networks. Netli is taking a fundamentally new approach to solving the performance and availability problems caused by distance-induced delay. It is helping businesses deliver on the bold promises of the Internet in a manner that is cost-effective, transparent to the company and its end users, and easy to implement."
How NetLightning works
NetLightning is implemented through Netli's patent-pending Reliable Application Platform for Instant Delivery (RAPID) service architecture. The platform is comprised of a series of globally distributed Virtual Data Centers and Application Access Points, global DNS redirection and IP address mapping system, high-performance transport protocol and content optimization software, and a 24x7 network operations center.
Customers subscribe to the NetLightning service for one or more Web applications, determine the appropriate type and location of the Application Access Point based on their peak end user demand and location of their application(s). They delegate to Netli the DNS processing for those applications. When an end user accesses one of these Web applications, the end user's browser is transparently redirected to the nearest Virtual Data Center. Netli has strategically deployed 13 Virtual Data Centers in major Internet user population centers around the world. The Web application request arrives at the Virtual Data Center as standard HTTP/TCP traffic, and is then converted to Netli's transport protocol, which is optimized for Web application traffic exchange over the long-haul segments of the Internet. Netli software at the Application Access Point converts the optimized protocols back to standard HTTP/TCP for the final, short connection to the customer's Web application server(s). The process is bi-directional; the returned data stream is optimized by the Application Access Point software and is then transported across the Internet to the Virtual Data Center closest to the end user.
Availability and pricing
The NetLightning service is available now. Pricing starts at about $7,000 a month. A typical customer implementation costs between $10,000 - $15,000 per application.
About Netli
Netli is the first company to deliver a complete Application Delivery Network (ADN) service that transparently provides global sub-second response times for Web applications that are located in a centralized data center. Organizations such as HP, Nielsen//NetRatings, and Millipore are using Netli's first service offering - NetLightning™ - to increase revenue, decrease support costs, and improve end user satisfaction without deploying expensive additional data center infrastructure. The service is ideal for organizations that want to achieve sub-second response times, increased availability, and secure access for their Web applications worldwide with no server or client changes, and no capital expenditures. NetLightning is built on Netli's patent-pending Reliable Application Platform for Instant Delivery (RAPID) infrastructure. RAPID is comprised of four major technology components: overlay network with virtual data centers located strategically worldwide, global DNS redirection and IP address mapping system, high-performance transport protocol and dynamic content optimization technology, and a 24x7 network operations center. The company is privately held and based in Palo Alto, California. Netli has raised over $21 million in equity financing from leading venture capital firms including Morgenthaler Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, Alta Partners, Nokia Venture Partners, and Leapfrog Ventures.
