  • NETFORECAST REPORT FINDS TURNS REDUCTION SOLUTIONS SUPERIOR TO CDN AND COMPRESSION FOR APPLICATION DELIVERY

New Research Indicates Transparent Turns Reduction (TTR) Provides Greatest Satisfied Users

Palo Alto, California-October 19, 2003-Netli, the first company to offer a complete Application Delivery Network (ADN), announced today that a new research report, titled Application Response Time Improvements with Transparent Turn Reduction by analyst firm NetForecast takes a detailed look at Web-based approaches to improving application performance. The report's major conclusion: "Enterprises would do well to look into Transparent Turn Reduction as they expand their Web-based applications to reach more users over greater distances." The report is available at www.netforecast.com/ReportsFrameset.htm Report 5066.

Fundamental inefficiencies in Internet protocols TCP and HTTP are the root cause of high response times for remote end users. An average Web page download requires 25-35 turns or round trips between an end user's browser and Web server. Round trip time increases with the distance between end user and the Web server. Multiply this round trip time with the number of round trips required to transfer an average web page and it becomes apparent that without reducing the number of round trips, it is impossible to reduce response times for distant users.

In their report, analysts Peter Sevcik and John Bartlett define Transparent Turn Reduction or TTR as "a new approach to improving application performance. TTR vendors recognize that application turns are the most significant factor in the performance equation once round trip delay exceeds 50 or 60 milliseconds."

"By understanding the level of performance that distributed users expect when making use of Web applications we can begin to form detailed conclusions about how different acceleration approaches increase user satisfaction," said Peter Sevcik, president, NetForecast. "This research demonstrates that emerging Transparent Turns Reduction technologies may provide the greatest benefit for the widest range of applications."

In the study, NetForecast examined the performance impact of TTR, content distribution networks (CDN) and compression technologies on customer relationship management (CRM), supply chain management, electronic transactions and electronic shopping applications. Each of the technologies were evaluated on whether they provided satisfactory, tolerating or frustrating end user response times for these applications.

"We are pleased to see research begin to embrace round trip reduction as one of the most effective solutions for improving Web application performance," said Willie Tejada, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Netli. "As the first and only provider of a high performance application delivery network based largely on round trip reductions Netli is at the leading edge of a new generation of technologies required to deliver Web applications on a global scale."

    About Netli
